Thebes Sacked

The Battle of Thebes Sacked was fought in 663 BC in Upper Egypt during the Third Intermediate era, a siege engagement against Assyrians. It ended in defeat for the Egyptian side.

Historical Note

Ashurbanipal of Assyria, avenging Taharqa's revolts, marched south as far as Thebes and sacked it — temples plundered, obelisks carried off. The catastrophe shocked the ancient world; the prophet Nahum, fifty years later, cited it as a warning to Nineveh.
