the King-Sage

Vishvamitra was an Indian sage active in the 10th c. BC during the Vedic Age period from the state of Kanyakubja. Died: renounced.

Historical Note

Born a Kshatriya king who lost a magical cow to the brahmin Vasishtha and tried to seize it by force. Defeated, he renounced his throne and spent ages in austerities to become a brahmin sage. Composed the Gayatri Mantra.
