Indian Rulers
Yajnavalkya
Master of the Upanishads
Yajnavalkya was an Indian sage active in the 8th c. BC during the Vedic Age period from the state of Videha. Died: renounced.
Historical Note
Court sage of Janaka of Videha. Won the great philosophical debate at Janaka's court — and Janaka's prized thousand cows — by silencing every rival. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is essentially him in dialogue.
