Pradyota

the Avanti Tyrant

Pradyota was an Indian king active in the 6th c. BC during the Mahajanapada period from the state of Avanti. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

Tyrant-king of Avanti at Ujjain. Captured the king of Kausambi by trick and married him to his daughter, who promptly helped her husband escape on Pradyota's own war-elephant. A favorite of later Sanskrit playwrights.
