Hieron II
Patron of Archimedes
Hieron II was a Greek king active in the 3rd c. BC during the Hellenistic period based in Syracuse. Died of natural causes.
Historical Note
Syracuse's last great king. Ruled 54 peaceful years, allied prudently with Rome through the First Punic War, and patronized Archimedes — who built him a screw, a warship, and a giant claw.
