Ra

the Sun in His Solar Barque

Ra is an Egyptian god of sun, associated with the realm of heaven. Ra belongs to the first generation of the pantheon. Roughly equivalent to Helios in cross-pantheon mapping. Symbolised by the sun disc.

Historical Note

Crosses the sky each day in the solar barque Mandjet, then descends through the twelve hours of the night-underworld in the barque Mesektet — fighting off the serpent Apophis at every hour. If Apophis ever wins, the sun does not rise.
