Egyptian Battles
Raphia
The Battle of Raphia was fought in 217 BC in Levant during the Ptolemaic era, a land engagement against Seleucids. It ended in victory for the Egyptian side.
Historical Note
Ptolemy IV met Antiochus III near Gaza with 70,000 men and 73 African elephants. The Indian elephants of the Seleucids panicked the African ones, but the phalanx held. Egypt kept Coele-Syria — and the native Egyptian troops armed for Raphia would soon turn on their Greek masters.
