Heraclea

The Battle of Heraclea was fought in 280 BC in Italia during the Republic era, a land engagement against Epirus. It ended in defeat for the Roman side.

Historical Note

Rome's first encounter with Greek pikemen and war elephants. Pyrrhus won — but at such cost it became the byword for 'Pyrrhic victory'.
