Apostle to Sri Lanka
Mahendra was an Indian sage active in the 3rd c. BC during the Maurya period from the state of Maurya. Died of natural causes.
Historical Note
Son of Ashoka who took Buddhism to Sri Lanka in 246 BC. Converted King Devanampiya Tissa under a mango tree, founded the Mahavihara at Anuradhapura, and lived out his life there as the island's apostle.
