Solon

the Lawgiver

Solon was a Greek archon active in the 6th c. BC during the Archaic period based in Athens. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

His reforms cancelled debts, freed debt-slaves, and created four property classes — laying the groundwork for Athenian democracy a century before Cleisthenes.
