Cleisthenes

Father of Democracy

Cleisthenes was a Greek archon active in the 6th c. BC during the Archaic period based in Athens. Died of natural causes.

Historical Note

Reorganized Attica into ten new tribes based on geography rather than clan — effectively inventing Athenian democracy and breaking aristocratic power.
