Croesus
the Wealthy
Croesus was a Lydian king active in the 6th c. BC during the Archaic Anatolia period. Died of natural causes.
Historical Note
Last king of Lydia and proverbially rich. Consulted the Delphic oracle ('If you cross the river, a great empire will fall') — the empire that fell was his own, to Cyrus.
