Roman Mythology
Bacchus
Deus Vini — God of Wine and Ecstasy
Bacchus is a Roman god of wine, associated with the realm of earth. Bacchus belongs to the demigod generation of the pantheon. Roughly equivalent to Dionysus in cross-pantheon mapping. Symbolised by the thyrsus.
Historical Note
The Bacchanalia — ecstatic wine-feasts in his honor — were banned by the Roman Senate in 186 BC as a threat to social order. Thousands were arrested or executed.
