Mahavira was an Indian sage active in the 5th c. BC during the Mahajanapada period from the state of Vajji. Died: renounced.
Historical Note
The 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. Renounced his kingdom at thirty, wandered naked for twelve years, attained omniscience, and taught radical non-violence — ahimsa, against every living thing. Fasted to death at Pava.
