Historical Note
Seventh avatar of Vishnu. Exiled fourteen years to the forest by his stepmother's intrigue; his wife Sita abducted by the demon-king Ravana; he assembled an army of monkeys and bears, crossed to Lanka, killed Ravana, and reclaimed her. The Ramayana is his story.
