Indian Rulers
Patanjali
Compiler of the Yoga Sutras
Patanjali was an Indian sage active in the 2nd c. BC during the Post-Maurya period from the state of Shunga. Died of natural causes.
Historical Note
Author of the Mahabhashya — the great commentary on Panini's grammar — and the Yoga Sutras, the foundational text of classical yoga. Compresses the eight limbs of yoga into 195 aphorisms; reading him is like reading wisdom condensed to crystal.
